HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE IVY LEAGUE
We have all heard about the term “Ivy League,” but not everyone can name these universities. They are all historical universities in the U.S. and all of them spread along the Upper Eastern Coast. 7 out of the 8 universities were built during the British colonial period. These Ivy League universities are: Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Yale University. Today these 8 universities have become synonymous with academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism.
Do you know where the term Ivy League came from? The answer is that no one is exactly sure where it is originated. The word “League” is associated with the schools’ athletic past, because they used to play intercollegiate games together. One of the saying about the word “Ivy” arouse from a casual use by a reporter. In 1937, reporter Caswell Adams was rumored to have complained to his boss about having to write about those old “Ivy-covered” universities and in his article about the Columbia/Penn game coined the term “Ivy League.” As a matter of fact, ivy really grew well on these old New England style buildings.
Ivy League schools are generally viewed as some of the most prestigious, and are ranked among the best universities in the world. All eight universities were placed in the top sixteen of the U.S. News and World Report 2015 university rankings, even the top four universities. U.S. News & World Report has named a member of the Ivy League as the best national university in the past fifteen years: Princeton eight times, Harvard twice and the two schools tied for first five times.
Ivy League universities are all privately owned. Just as public universities, they are simultaneously receiving federal government funding and private donations for academic research. Ivy League financial endowments range from Brown's $3 billion to Harvard's $36.4 billion, which is the largest financial Endowment of any academic institution in the world.
